Taylor Sheridan’s Landman drips with West Texas oil-patch grit — so a lot of viewers are surprised to learn the show is filmed mostly right here in North Texas. Here’s the set-vs-filmed truth.
Set in West Texas, filmed near Fort Worth
Landman is set in the Permian Basin — the Midland/Odessa oil country of West Texas. But it’s primarily filmed in and around Fort Worth, which serves as the production’s home base. Fort Worth’s tourism office has confirmed filming took place “in and around” the city.
Why not just film in West Texas?
Because shooting full-time in the remote Permian Basin is brutal and expensive — extreme heat, long distances, and limited crew and equipment infrastructure. North Texas lets the production capture the look of West Texas while working in a production-friendly region with crews, studios, and support nearby. It’s the same logic powering the whole North Texas film boom. (See The Taylor Sheridan Effect.)
Real North Texas spots that “played” West Texas
According to local reporting, several memorable settings are actually around Fort Worth:
- The Patch Cafe (supposedly in Odessa) was an old auto body shop on Camp Bowie West Boulevard in Fort Worth.
- The “Midland Country Club” was a golf course northwest of Fort Worth.
- Scenes were shot in Jacksboro, a small town northwest of the city.
A few authentic West Texas locations do appear — including Ratliff Stadium in Odessa, the famous Friday Night Lights venue.
The takeaway
The magic of Landman is partly North Texas movie-making magic — and it’s a great example of how much production muscle the region now has. Want to see which other Sheridan shows are made here? Read Every Taylor Sheridan Show Filmed in the DFW Area.
